Introduction

An extrusion line runs continuously, but the reels feeding it or taking up its output do not last forever. Every payoff reel empties and every take-up reel fills, and each changeover would normally force the whole line to stop. An accumulator or dancer system exists to store a reserve length of wire so the extruder keeps running through that changeover instead of stopping and restarting.

The mechanism varies by design. A vertical accumulator tower feeds wire up and down through a series of rollers, building up a buffer length as the tower fills. A dancer arm assembly instead uses a spring-loaded or pneumatic arm that expands and contracts to absorb short-term speed differences between two sections of line, keeping tension within a set range rather than storing a large buffer.

Positioned either ahead of the extruder on the payoff side or ahead of the take-up on the output side, this system is what lets a line run through reel changes without the diameter variation and scrap that start-stop cycles tend to produce.
